Two minors have been joined in a traditional marriage in Buyende town council in Buyende district. The 9-year-old “groom is a primary two pupil of Buteme Light primary school in Kamuli district.
The “bride” is six years old and a pupil of Madarasat Muslim primary school in Buyengo Sub County in Jinja district.
Nakabila Royal shrines in Buyende town council Buyende district was the venue from where the couple tied the knot on Thursday morning.
The groom’ parents are said to have visited the bride’s parents in December 2013 when he was 3 years old.
Three cows, 12 goats, 15 chicken and three million Uganda shillings was allegedly paid as bride price.
“Well, I am a spiritualist and a herbalist led by the spirits of the land, and when I was three years old in 2013, the gods told me that I should marry my bride who was born in Jinja district.
What you have seen today is fulfillment of their wishes,” said a beaming groom after tying the knot.
The boy’s mother, Hajirah Namulondo, revealed that her son started speaking at birth and demanded a bride, hence asking the traditional leaders to recognize him and build him a decent palace.
The girl’s father, Alamanzani Gamukiibya also claimed her daughter’s marriage is destiny – decided by the gods.
But Sanon Kirya, a representative from the Budiope chiefdom reveals that they are under pressure from the authorities who are on their neck, saying the marriage of the minors is illegal.
“The union between the two is a cultural matter, which is very hard to explain to the much civilized society and often times, police interrupt our activities,” he revealed.
However, the Busoga North Police spokesperson, Michael Kasadha declared the wedding illegal, saying marriages between minors are strictly abominable and that the perpetrators will face the law since the children are below 18, Uganda’s age of consent.
