Uganda cranes delivered a statement of intent by thumping an out of sorts Democratic Republic of Congo 2-0 in a game played on Saturday at the Cairo National Stadium.
The game, played through excessive heat that called for a cooling break saw Patrick Henry Kaddu open the deadlock as early as the 14th minute when he headed home a telling corner kick from Faruku Moya.
DRC then survived a barrage of Cranes attacks, with Abdul Lumala, Mike Azira, Khalid Aucho and Kaddu coming close to adding a second.
The telling blow was came three minutes after the mondatory break when Emmanuel Okwi won a foul and Faruku Miya stepped up to take the resultant free-kick. Okwi would then head the cross past the helpless Ley Matampi.
DRC responded by launched a series of attacks which all ended in the palms of Denis Onyango, Africa’s finest glovesman.
There were outstanding performances from Mike Azira and Abdul Lumala who danced past his opponents for fun and created a series of chances with his ghostly runs and clever play.
The win puts Uganda atop group A with three points and two goals as they wait to entertain wounded Zimbabwe on 26th June 2019.
